Indispensible
This is one of the great works of psychology and it’s all the more remarkable for being written in a style that’s so easily understood. You don’t need an in depth knowledge of psychology to grasp what’s being said. And what is being said is often dynamite. Never before, or possibly since, has a book painted such a clear and powerful description of the inner life of women.
It’s all the better for having been written by a woman in the usually rather patriarchal world of psychology and psychoanalysis. It’s the book about women that Jung would’ve loved to write but frankly it would have been beyond him. Insights such as are found in this book are unlikely to come from men. However Harding studied with him and broadly speaking takes a Jungian stance but her influences extend beyond that and she’s not one to tow any party line.
This book is pretty indispensable and it’s likely you’ll keep returning to it over time. She even includes a section devoted to the dynamics of relationships in old age, so I’ll probably want to keep it at least until then!
